What is overpotential?

What is overpotential in Electrochemistry? What is overpotential in Electrocrystallization?

Answer: Every pair of electrodes have a threshold potential to be activated, that is, to start the reactions. The overpotential is the extra potential applied on top of the threshold potential. So, the applied potential is always bigger than the overpotential.
Overpotential is usually important for the reactions' thermodynamics as this is the amount of potential reactions really affected.
